Rob Lowe and Sons Bond Over Shared AncestryDNA® Traits Ahead of Father’s Day

3 MIN READ

This Father’s Day, Emmy®-nominated actor Rob Lowe (UnstableParks & Recreation, 9-1-1 Lone Star) and his sons, John Owen and Matthew, teamed up with Ancestry® to revisit Rob’s teenage stomping grounds and discover all the ways they’re more alike than they thought. The trio explores their DNA results and Parental Traits Inheritance – a new AncestryDNA feature that reveals physical and personality traits you may have inherited from each parent. Their discoveries even include some not-so-perfect traits that the boys lovingly troll their famous dad for passing down to them.

Their journey begins with Rob telling his sons more about who he was before he became “dad” at the Santa Monica pier, a spot he frequented in high school marine biology class. After Rob’s sons joke about his “health freak competitive energy”, Rob exclaims, “Chris Traeger famously said he would ‘be the first human being to live to be 150 years old.’ Let’s see if my genetics actually support that possibility.”

John Owen reveals Rob’s Parks & Rec character *literally* runs in his genes, as DNA results show he is most likely to be a sprinter. The trio learns Rob passed this trait down to Matthew, as well as traits for competitiveness and focus to both of his sons.

The three then make their way to Santa Monica High, where Rob attended class alongside other notable “Brat Pack” celebs which helped the school earn its nickname “Handsome High”. While checking just how genetically handsome their dad is, they reveal Rob is likely to have a unibrow and male pattern baldness according to his DNA traits. After recovering from the initial shock, Rob congratulates his sons on not inheriting what he jokingly called “the only thing that matters,” as both boys’ results showed they were unlikely to go bald.

The nostalgia of his high school theater leads Rob to reminisce on his failed Footloose audition, and they discover genetics may be to blame. Rob learns his DNA suggests he really struggles with performing choreography – something he passed down to both sons. Rob says, “This is how I know this is legit…I was fighting genetics in my Footloose audition. I had no hope!”

Rob’s DNA does suggest he is likely to enjoy dancing (despite not having a natural talent for it), which explains the iconic Chris Traeger dance moves he breaks out that John Owen claims his dad is “proud of.”

The Lowes end the day with a heartfelt video call to Grandpa Chuck (Rob’s dad) to fill him in on everything they learned.

Reflecting on this experience, Rob says, “This was the greatest Father’s Day gift. To be taken on this journey of family, who we are and how it was baked in genetically was amazing. I’ll remember it for a long time.”Take it from the Lowes — exploring what DNA traits you share is a bonding experience that might just bring you closer together.
