English and Irish (of Norman origin): habitational name from La Varrenne in Seine-Maritime, France, named with a Gaulish element probably descriptive of alluvial land or sandy soil. This was the name of a major Norman family after the Conquest.

In Ireland, this name has been Gaelicized as Bharain. Irish: adopted as an English form of Gaelic Ó Murnáin (see Murnane, Warner).
